Specimen Collection Updates – October 2021

The following information was sent via email or updated in the Spectrum Health Laboratory Catalog.

Test Updates:

Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB), Culture with smear [LAB8770] – Clarification on swab specimen type. “Only ESwabs will be accepted” has been added to specimen type. Under rejection criteria “Incorrect swab type or dry swab”

Alpha-Subunit Pituitary Tumor Marker [LAB840] – Effective 10/12/21, a Gold SST F tube was added as the primary container, the minimum volume was adjusted to 2 mL

aPTT [LAB325] – High and Reduced intensity anticoagulation therapeutic range updated to 42 – 57 seconds.

Bilirubin Total and Direct [LAB168] – “No Light” was added to the specimen label

Folate [LAB69] – No longer be performed at Blodgett Lab (BIRL) and will now be performed and route to Spectrum Health Reference Laboratory (Grand Rapids)

Free Kappa and Lambda [LAB3114] – Test frequency updated to Monday through Friday, TAT 1-3

Inhibin A Tumor Marker Serum [LAB1230513] –  The preferred container was updated to Gold Top SST Tube R and the secondary container to Red Top Tube R. The collection instructions on the specimen label were updated to +S/PO/R.

Inhibin B Serum [LAB1230514] The preferred container was updated to Gold Top SST Tube R and the secondary container to Red Top Tube R. The collection requirements were updated to +S/PO/R. The minimum volume was updated to 2.5.

Monoclonal Gammopathy [LAB1230573] – Test frequency updated to Monday through Friday, TAT 1-3

Oxidative Burst [LAB2111414] and Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency (LAD) [LAB2111401] no longer require a control specimen to be drawn with the patient.

RSV Rapid [LAB495] – Clinical information now says “The intended use of this test is only for pediatric patients (less than 5 years of age).” instead of 19 years of age.

Sperm Presence-Post Vasectomy [LAB8910] (Only available at select locations) – The result component was updated from “Spermatozoa Count” to “Spermatozoa Presence”. A reference range of “Absent” was added to correlate with the “Present” or “Absent” result options.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate, Plasma)[LAB120]  – Changed from refrigerated to frozen. The performing location, collection instructions, minimum volume and component naming conventions were also updated in Epic.

Vitamin B12 [LAB67] – No longer be performed at Blodgett Lab (BIRL) and will now be performed and route to Spectrum Health Reference Laboratory (Grand Rapids)

 

All Coagulation tests have a rejection criteria of “Specimen has been thawed” added, except Verify Now, PFA and Platelet Aggregation.

 

Test Code Changes:

Metanephrines Fractionated Random Urine has a new order code: LAB1230839 (former code: LAB3157) due to update from Mayo Clinic Laboratories

The following lab tests had updated information for interfaced clients with Spectrum Health. If you did not receive the file definition via email, please contact your vendor, the PRAS Team or use the contact us link above.

Result Change:

CMV DNA Quant by PCR (10838) – Old result 20783, new result 12309487

EBV DNA Quant by PCR (11713) – Old result 23009, new result 12309488

Additional Results added:

Urinalysis (10067) – new results (12309447 thru 1230964)

Urinalysis w/Micro Exam, C and S if indicated (10540) – new results (12309447 thru 1230464)
